It's, Um, Well, You Know, a Problem

I like to think that I can speak well most of the time. I have a good vocabulary and a voice that carries well. Sometimes I feel it's a bit more nasal than I'd like, but that's not horrible. (You ever notice that your voice sounds far “cooler” in your head than when you listen to a recording of it? In my head, I'm Dennis Haysbert, but everywhere else I'm Gilbert Gottfried. Not really, but you get the idea.)

What I really have trouble with is thinking and talking simultaneously. If I already know what I'm talking about, the words come out pretty easily, but if I'm thinking about it as I go, I tend to stumble and say “um” a lot. It really bothers me, particularly when I'm talking about something technical at work in front of several other co-workers. How do you avoid using filler words when you talk?

I've noticed that when the "brethren" are talking in public they tend to talk very slow. THINKING first and then talking about the subject at hand. My parents have tried to get me to do this for years yet the only way I can slow down is to stutter. Might want to try that too.

Yes, when I have the opportunity to think out what I want to say first, I do. The problem comes when I'm in the middle of a conversation and I suddenly think of something (the solution to a bug, for example) that wasn't in my head three seconds before. I won't have had the opportunity to plan out the phrasing ahead of time, so I tend to stumble when I'm trying to explain my thoughts.

Yes well you could still try slowing down your talking. Kinda like Data when his power is wearing down.

Heh, as long as you don't slow down too much, because then you just sound—wait for it—slow. Or you sound like William Shatner, to continue the Trek vein.

ah, but at least you notice your habit and are trying to do something about it.

Many people don't even notice when they do stuff like that. It took me being videotaped to realized that I play with my hair when I'm teaching. I have to pin it up or spend a great deal of effort to make sure I don't do that.

Um so like you totally don't have that parrot guys voice. You sound a lot better than him, deeper and more sultry than he could ever hope to be. IF you really did sound like he does I would never hang out with you. And yes I'm that shallow, his voice really bugs me.

“Sultry?” Does your husband know you're posting this? :)
